The Driver Performance Analysis System (DPAS) is a valid and reliable online test that measures and analyzes a driver's traffic related knowledge and skills. Although the ability to control the speed and direction of a large truck is a fundamental and vital driving skill that every fleet truck driver must possess, each driver must also be able to quickly and accurately collect and process related driver and traffic information if he or she is to safely and efficiently deliver the fleet goods. Even with the latest in safety technology, it is ultimately up to the driver to see that the critical information essential for safe driving is collected and processed, and DPAS diagnostic data can be used as an accurate evaluator of a driver’s traffic knowledge and skills, including traffic risk recognition and acceptance.
Essentially, DPAS is an affordable two-phase driver performance measurement and analysis program. Phase One of the DPAS is a one-hour video oriented test, during which the driver will have an opportunity to agree or disagree with driver and traffic related comments that are made while the traffic scenes are being shown on the video screen. Phase Two is a computer analysis of the test that provides the driver's general information, scores in different areas of traffic knowledge and skills, analysis of driver skill level, and recommended training based on the test results. The informative and easy to follow analysis report allows fleet management to see what their drivers do well and what they need to improve safety.
DPAS is a crash prevention instrument, but not a crash prediction instrument. Research has shown that drivers with the ability to quickly and accurately collect and process critical driver and traffic information have statistically fewer motor vehicle crashes than drivers that are deficient in this ability. Thus, DPAS measures the driver's skills in collecting and processing the critical traffic information that is essential for safe and efficient motor vehicle operation, generates statistical profiles of the driver's capabilities and deficiencies, and can be used for on-going training, incident or accident retraining, or evaluating new hires.
